The point here is that you don’t NEED to spend thousands of dollars to participate, but for convenience, safety and your development, it’s nice to have a little more than just the bare bones. The following is a list of items to use for both training and race day:

Swim:
  • Bathing Suit: unless you’re training in the French Riviera, you’ll need some trunks. The point here is to get something that allows you to move (i.e. doesn’t bulk up in the centre or create extra drag in the water).
  • Goggles: One or two pairs – one for training in a pool (clear for good visibility) and one for racing (with tint just in case sun is a factor).
  • Wetsuit: In addition to keeping you warm, you also get a “free lift” thanks to the buoyancy. This can be rented for race day, but just remember that fit is super important (like a second skin). If your suit is too big or too small it can negate the whole benefit of having one in the first place.
Bike:
  • Helmet: Not only is it essential for participating (read: you are not allowed to race if you don’t have one) but it makes perfect sense too. You never know when it can save your life so ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET in training and racing (well maybe if you’re on an indoor trainer you can forgo :)).
  • Bike: The point here is that you should have your own bike that is fit for you (vs. just using a stationary or spin bike for training). I would suggest mastering a road bike before making the leap to a triathlon bike, especially if you are racing in a shorter distance. However if all you have is a mountain bike then I might suggest getting road tires vs. anything with a heavy grip.
  • Water Bottles: hydration both in training and racing is important. Always have a water bottle handy.
  • Clip-in Shoes / Pedals: More bang for your buck – get the benefits of muscle power on your backstroke, upstroke as well as your downstroke! First time with clip-ins? Practice first on the grass!
